Linear's New GD00Z Failed with our Vera Lite

Hi folks, we finally got our hands on the new Linear GD00Z garage door opener Z-Wave controller.
I remember first seeing this product at the ISC show in Vegas back in April and could not wait to get my hands on it.
Today, we tested this device with our test Veras we have determined that it is not ready for use with the Vera Lite controller.
We do have a tech support ticket open with Vera and we will see if we can get this device working with the Vera controllers.
We will let you know how it goes.

UPDATE 17/July: After 2 phone conferences with Vera's tech support they still can not get the GD00Z to include correctly. This time they recorded logs to dissect by higher tech support .

They said that they think the problem is with the Vera's but until they figure out what is the exact problem is, they can not fix it.

They said they were looking into it and would get back shortly.

Bottom Line, hold off on buying one until we know for sure that if the GD00Z will work with Vera.

UPDATE 30/July: After an email update request, this email was sent to me today.
"We are adding support for the Linear Garage door opener over the next couple of weeks.
Our development team is working on adding support for that and once it’s added we will release an update which will allow to work."

I have requested a more accurate date for the availability of this update.
I have also requested if there was anything I can do to our existing Vera's to make the GD00Z work now.

UPDATE 4/Aug: I received a call from Vera today. They said that to use the GD00Z would require you to update to UI7 and it would require a firmware update. They said it should be available within a week.
When asked, "Can I still remain on UI5 and use the GD00Z?" They responded that UI5 would not be supported to make the GD00Z work.

As disappointing as this is, I am on the fence to upgrading to UI7 as some of the app I have installed do not yet work on UI7

As usual I will put any pertinent information this issue here.

UPDATE 27/Aug: On the 25/August,  I called and left a message and sent a reply via the support ticket opened for this problem and as of 6:55 on 27/Aug I have received no reply back.
It has been 7 weeks since I opened this ticket.

Update 30/Aug: I received a call from Vera tech support today. They said they still had no date for the UI7 update that will enable use of the Z-Wave GD00Z with their Vera systems. When questioned about the release date of the update, he told me that he had no date again but it was looking to be at least another month or two.
If you need something now, we do have an easy solution for this problem here.

Update 13/Oct: I sent a request to update this still open ticket and received this response from Vera.

"At the moment the Linear GD00Z-1 can be added on the Vera unit but it won’t work as it uses a a new z-wave command class that’s not yet supported by Vera.
Our development team is working on adding support for that and once it’s added we will release a new firmware which will allow the device to work with Vera.
From what I know the Linear Garage Door Opener should work with the next UI7 release which will be released soon but unfortunately I don’t have an estimated date.
I’m very sorry for the inconvenience."

Just hooked up mine and have the same issue you have. Hopefully a plugin or something can easily fix this issue. I appreciate you starting the ticket with MCV and keeping us in the loop!

Thanks for the heads up about the incompatibility! I placed the order with Lowes then decided to check for compatibility issues- ran across your site and then cancelled the order immediately. Hopefully, this gets resolved before they get pulled from the shelves as Linear is getting sue for patent infringement.

@Brian, right now the only place to get them is Lowes. But when and if they are proven to work with Vera, we will be selling them here.

Today their tech support guys sent me an email that they were trying to reproduce the problem. I think that means they had ordered one and were waiting for it to arrive. I will post anything important here.

See response below

Hi ,

We are working on adding support for the Linear Garage door opener over the next couple of weeks.
Our development team is working on that and once it’s added we will release a beta firmware for the users who are having this type of device.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Dana, thanks for the response. What version will the beta firmware be in? UI5,UI6 or UI7?

I would like to let you know that our development team is currently working on implementing the new Garage Door Opener.
This should be included in the next software update (UI7 firmware version) which should be released shortly.
Unfortunately Vera2 hardware doesn’t meet the minimum requirements for UI7. But, on the upside, we’re finalizing the upgrade program for existing Vera1 and Vera2 owners shortly.
So you’ll have an easy, cost effective way to upgrade to a current controller.

Please let me know if you have further questions and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi Vera support, please advise that the new UI7 release candidate still does not support this opener as mentioned. Can you confirm?

I can confirm from a user standpoint that the GDO doesn't work with UI7 release candidate (1.7.318)

Josh

Isn't it required that all z-wave devices communicate with each other with the standard protocol? Why is this even an issue? How do you contact the z-wave police?

Reply
Jamr link

Normally that is true but apparently this unit uses some new command class in communicating. I assume because it is protecting a door. It appears Vera is not familiar with it.

Anom, please read my last update dated 30/Aug above. Vera is still at least a month out to implementing an update.

I wish I found this post before I installed mine. I am having the same issue, and I am NOT upgrading to UI7 until that firmware gives me a warm and cozy. So please have a fix for UI5.

Jerene, It has been made clear by Vera that UI7 will be the update to make the GD00Z work. Their comment here on 9/Aug/14 states this.
I will most likely upgrade at that time from my beloved UI5 to UI7. If you plan on staying with UI5, I doubt it will be possible to get the GD00Z to work.
If you ned something that works now, please check out our kit here.

Jamr, there was an UI7 update and few days again have you installed it? Does the GDO work?

Clint
23/10/2014 11:25:32

Uggg, I just got mine in the mail today and can not get it to connect to my Vera 2 with UI5. I do an internet search and end up here. So frustrating. I didn't even think to check for compatibility before ordering. Vera really pisses me off. I would be happy to pay more if there hardware was faster and support was better.

Clint, I know the feeling. I am looking into selling other systems because of the lack of support with Vera.

They still have no update or fix for this problem and the ticket has been open since 7/July/14 even though Vera guarantees their controllers to work with all Z-Wave devices.

Jamr
9/10/2014 14:31:21

@jerene, no I have not. They were suppose to notify us of a working update. I will look into it.

It appears to me that there is a case for a small class action against Vera. I am very disappointed in their response to this situation and their false advertising claim that all Zwave devices are compatible with there product. Since it is obvious that they can't or won't fix this problem I am willing to spearhead and file a class action suite. I need at least 10 co-defendants to be able to file in California.

I am getting the same response from Vera. They will support the garage door opener at some point with U17. I have tried u17 and went back to u15.Their web site says they support all zwave devises. So much for standing by their customers.

Clint, I agree as now I will have to decide whether I want to move to UI7.
As for the hardware, their new controller will be called "The VeraEdge".
It will be available (according to Vera) on Dec 1 for 149.95$.
I will write a separate blog for it here.

I am glad to hear that a new controller is coming out but I wish it was at a higher price point. I was really wanting a more professional controller with a faster processor. I would be happy to pay a premium for the increased specs as currently the controller is only a fraction of the two total system cost but is the most important component.

I did get some low battery notifications when I first upgraded to UI7, but they have cleared up since the update. I do not think the battery notifications are accurate at all as most of my sensors show 100% and I know they are not. It is another problem Vera has to fix.

Can anybody confirm that they got this to pair on the vera-lite 2, software v17439? I hold the button eventually the GD00Z beeps once, then after a few seconds beeps ever second, but the Vera doesn't pick it up :/
